further reference. The report deals with the three remaining birds. Methods.?The infections were induced by intramuscular inoculation of parasitised blood from an artificially infected sparrow. The birds were treated after the appearance of parasites in the peripheral blood, but before the acute stage had developed. If treatment is left to a later stage it may be difficult to say whether a reduction in the number of parasites is due to the action of a drug or to the natural recovery which is usually evident in infections with this strain of P. relictum. The dosage employed was 5 mg. per 20 g. of body-weight of bird; this dose was lound by Tate and Vincent (1934) to be the

The Effect of Indian-Made Mepacrine Hydrochloride on Plasmodium Knowlesi *Prepared by Bengal Chemical and Pharmaceutical Works Ltd., Calcutta.

The satisfactory results obtained in the treatment of bird malaria (P. relictum) with mepacrine hydrochloride (Das Gupta and Siddons, 1943) encouraged us to try it in P. knowlesi infection in the monkey, Silenus rhesus. It is well known that, in this monkey^ this parasite produces the most intense infection which, if unchecked, usually terminates fatally. Therefore, infected monkeys are very su...

In Vitro Activity of Mefloquine and its Enantiomers Against Plasmodium falciparum

The in vitro activity of rac-mefloquine hydrochloride and its pure enantiomers was tested against a chloroquine-resistant (PF.IBS2) strain of Plasmodium falciparum. The parasite isolated from Iranian patients was cultured in vitro by the candle jar method described by Tranger and Jensen and was exposed to the racemic mefloquine or its enantiomers over the concentration range of 10-9 to 10-4 M. ...

Complete avian malaria parasite genomes reveal features associated with lineage-specific evolution in birds and mammals.

Avian malaria parasites are prevalent around the world and infect a wide diversity of bird species. Here, we report the sequencing and analysis of high-quality draft genome sequences for two avian malaria species, Plasmodium relictum and Plasmodium gallinaceum We identify 50 genes that are specific to avian malaria, located in an otherwise conserved core of the genome that shares gene synteny w...

Experimental inhibition of nitric oxide increases Plasmodium relictum (lineage SGS1) parasitaemia.

Malaria is a widespread vector-borne disease infecting a wide range of terrestrial vertebrates including reptiles, birds and mammals. In addition to being one of the most deadly infectious diseases for humans, malaria is a threat to wildlife. The host immune system represents the main defence against malaria parasites. Identifying the immune effectors involved in malaria resistance has therefor...

Descriptions of their morphology are provided as none of the examined parasites fully concord with their type (...
